When I first got back from my mission, I said, “I’m going to start a blog.” My family spent a few days at the beach and I searched for something to write about. During our time there, we spent a lot of time searching for sea glass. The sea glass gave me a blog idea, but then….we all know, I never started that blog. Until now! Finally I can write about my lesson with sea glass.

Sea glass is a piece of glass, usually from a bottle, that has been softened by living in the ocean for a time. It gets pushed around by waves and the sharp edges get softened into a beautiful glass that’s highly sought after by beach goers.

In many ways, we’re a lot of these pieces of sea glass. We start out as these rough, sharp pieces, that turn into beautiful, soft sea glass. We come to earth with rough edges. Throughout our life, we’re beat up by the sea and trials, yet in the end, we come out with soft edges. Sometimes we forget about the power of trials. But trials change us. Trials bless us. Trials turn our rough edges into soft edges, little by little.

We all experience trials. Every single day of our lives, there’s something that teaches us. And that’s what trials are. They are lessons. Sometimes they’re hard to learn, but they’re worth it. I’m sure if sea glass had feelings, it’d be frustrated with the way it gets tossed back and forth. I mean, don’t we often complain about the waves that toss us around in our lives? But we never understand the end result until we’re living it. You would never pick up a piece of a glass bottle and take it home, right? But, all of a sudden, after a long time being tossed around, it becomes such a sought-after treasure.

We are sought-after treasures. The Lord wants to refine us. He wants us to be beautiful. Unlike sea glass, our “before” shot is still beautiful. At least in the Lord’s eyes. And that’s all that matters anyway. But with the trials, with the tossing, we become more refined and more beautiful. We begin to see our own worth in the way the Lord sees us. We see ourselves in His eyes. With all the color and beauty of sea glass.
