The other day I was scrolling through my Instagram when I came across this quote from John Green, featured as the cover photo here today. I knew right then that I wanted to write this week’s post about that quote. It says, “I don’t know a perfect person. I only know flawed people who are still worth loving.”
When I was young, this quote wouldn’t have meant much. But as I’ve grown up, I’ve learned a lot about how perfect our imperfections truly are. We complain on a near-daily basis of all the things we can’t do right. We look at other people and see this perfect production. We compare someone else’s perfect show to our behind-the-scenes.
In reality, we’re all imperfect. We all mess up. We all fall short of what we think we should be. No one on this earth is perfect. Yet, we are loved. We are loved by our family and friends. And beyond that, we are loved by our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ.
When I think about that, I think of the fact that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know every single thing about us. Things that even our family and friends on this earth don’t know. And they love us more than any person on this earth does. How amazing is that? Despite knowing every single flaw and misdeed and shortcoming, we are so beloved and cherished.
John Green says in his quote that he only knows flawed people, but he follows it up with the beautiful phrase “still worth loving.” He knows that all people, including himself, are imperfect. But, he knows, as we all should, that people are still worth loving.
All these imperfect people around us share at least one thing in common.
We are all children of God. And He loves each and every one of us. And that’s all we need to know.
