Focus on what’s most important and everything else will fall into place.

How long is your to-do list? If you’re like me, it’s probably too long. As I swam through the pages of my to-do list, I came across the Eisenhower Matrix. It looks a little something like this:

What a wonderful way to figure out what to do with your time! There are a limited number of hours in the day, and it’s often difficult to pick what should come first.

Do

These are the things that are both important and urgent. This could be scheduled doctor’s appointment, after-school activities, or work. Think of things that will cause big problems if they don’t get done today.

Plan

What is important, but not urgent on your to-do list? That’s what needs to be planned for a future date/time. It might be today, and it might not. But it shouldn’t matter if it’s not urgent. That might include switching out seasonal clothes, sending a letter, writing an email, or anything that doesn’t have a strict deadline.

Delegate

Sometimes there are things that come along that are urgent, but they’re not exactly important. These are the things that should be delegated to someone else where possible. Let’s clarify that it’s not that the thing itself isn’t important, but simply the fact that you do it. There are plenty of things that you can hand off to someone else. This looks a little bit different for everyone, but if there’s a part of your church responsibilities or work responsibilities that can be given to someone else without adding more stress to their lives, it can be delegated to them.

Eliminate

These are all the things that aren’t important or urgent. They’re also often the things I personally spend the most time on. I’m looking at you, Netflix and Hulu. They’re so entertaining but they take far too much time away from the more important and urgent things on my to-do list. I’ll let you decide what fits into this category in your life.

I can’t say that this method will fix all of your problems. I’m guessing your to-do list will still be longer than you’d like. But, I do know that prioritizing will make your life a bit easier. You’ll find that as you look through your to-do list, the most important things will come to light and the things that are less important will fall away.

Fill your time with what you feel is most important and you’ll be happier.
